Project 10 Translation Device

Description

I want to make a translation device to exam characters in comics. Comics, especially superhero comics, are loved by children. Children understand the world also through those stories. I’m a comic fan so I want to make my last project of CC about this thing I love.

Design Process

I was not sure will to go after I found that superhero API. My instructor Lan suggests me to think about stereotypes in comics because she feels that might be some modes that comic writer based on to create the characters.

I feel the same way. Most characters I like in comics are black hair characters, but I actually don’t have any preference for hair color. My research shows that people sometimes relate hair color to personality. For example, people may think blonde males or females are attractive. Because of this stereotype, according to Michelle Beddow, blonde males and females will be thought of as “less intelligent.” Red hair people are always seen as emotional. They will be thought of as aggressive and temperamental. I wonder if those stereotypes also exist in comics.

I actually don’t see any conspicuous stereotype in my visualization. This is what I expect when I was doing sketches, and this is what I see on screen. Blond hair characters have similar intelligence with characters with other colors’ hair.

However, I do find that characters with black hair and blonde hair are most popular in comics. Another problem I notice from this project is that most characters in comics are male and female, but there are other genders. I know a few comics are trying to tell stories about transgender or agender people. I hope to see more brilliant stories about more diverse people in superhero comics.

Reflection

1.Examing Power:

By examing superheroes I'm examining the power since films like Batman or The Avengers made superheroes popular in recent years.

2.Consider Context:

I decide to visualize the superhero data in this way because I feel showing a graphic with different colors’ points help people to see more obviously.
